PLANTS OF THE EASTERN SAN GABRIEL MOUNTAINS
AN INITIAL CHECKLIST

by
Dick Swinney & Andrew C. Sanders
Copyright: March, 2008

The impetus for this study began with my publication of the Glendora Foothills Plant Checklist - San Gabriel Mountains, 1994. I began collecting plants in the eastern San Gabriel Mountains after the Glendora Foothills project was complete and have continued to the present. An update to the Glendora plants is available on my web page as well my publication of Vascular Plants of the South Hills, 2006.

As with the plants of the Glendora project, Andrew C. Sanders, Curator of the UCR Herbarium has been responsible for the identification of the plants. Others that participated in the identification process included G.K. Helmkamp, Mark Hershkovitz, Mark S. Brunell, Mitch Provance, S.D. White, Steve Boyd and Tim Ross. Copies of most of the plants were also included for the RSA herbarium and were processed with the same identification label as ones interred into the UCR collection.

Andy has completed the processing of eight thousand plants of my east San Gabriel Mountain collection. The next update to this list will be made when the final specimens that were identified to genus only, are identified. He is currently working on this project. The last collection of 500 voucher specimens was recently delivered to UCR and will not be looked at until 2009.

I will continue collecting in the eastern San Gabriels for years to come. I’m currently working on the publication of minifloras of the mountain peaks and other sensitive areas of the E. San Gabriels and will put them on line as they are completed. Most of the collecting for these sensitive areas is completed. All named peaks and many prominent ridge tops (that will be identified by elevation number and location), will be included. A complete collection of the plants of each peak is made during at least two different seasons. To have a reliable record, normally all plants are collected for reference. Collected plants, in a vegetative condition, are collected for identification only. It is not always possible to identify these plants to species level and further collecting has to take place. These plants are identified by Andy and returned to me. They are not processed into the UCR or RSA collections. This will serve as reference point for future collecting and will be added onto by collections that have been made in the past by others. A search for additional specimens made by other collectors will not be made at this time, except for the source listed below.

Many of the plants have not yet been determined to the subspecies level. This will be made available as their identification is completed. Location data has been included for the ferns and gymnosperms. The continuation of this work is ongoing. This current list includes 1,349 taxa.

Plants included in The San Dimas Experimental Forest: 50 Years of Research, 1988, that I have not yet observed in the E. San Gabriel Mountains, are included in this publication as well. They will be noted by the SDEF reference. These plants were assembled from the 1930’s through the 1950’s with an update in August 1984. A Nomenclature Revision of this Appendix A-Flora was made by me in June of 1999 and is currently listed on my web page. Many of these plants are weedy species and grasses. The SDEF initiated a great deal of erosion-deterent research using non native grasses. Many of these grass species may no longer be present. Some of the weedy species were collected near their headquarters at Tanbark Flats.

Map of the Eastern San Gabriel Mountains

My appreciation to Tom Chester who posted the first list of plants from my collection on his web page. He obtained this list from accessing the UCR Herbarium digital data base. Tom converted the plants on that initial list to currently used taxa if necessary, and included common names for each as well. The location map was made by Tom as well.

All names used in this publication, unless otherwise stated, conform to The Jepson Manual Higher Plants of California, James C. Hickman, Editor, 1993.
Exceptions: New changes in species names since The Jepson Manual, 1993 are being used here as they become known. These species will be indicated by the symbol +
These names have been taken from the USDA Plant Database unless otherwise indicated.
The + may only indicate that the former subtaxa have been dropped.

* = California is the only state in the United States and Canada that this plant occurs.

Common Names: When more than one name is given, the last name has been taken from the USDA Plant Databae
